HOW I GOT HERE IN
THE FIRST PLACE.
From an entry-level seat inside Giorgio Armani’s marketing department to creating global brand strategies for Volkswagen to running online reputation management for a real estate empire to helping e-commerce beauty and fashion brands (and their CEOs) tell their stories, I’ve done a bit of everything. Today, I recognize the common thread in all of my seemingly disconnected roles over the past decade: they all called for a powerful message to move people to action. Whether that action was a $2,000 dress purchase, a stake in our expensive stock, or a course enrollment, I’m proud to say that I brought the words to make it happen. Today, I whip words into money-making narratives for creatives who have something to say, but sometimes get stuck on how to say it.
I chose the way with words
you should too.
Blame it on my childhood book obsession with the Harry Potter series or my affinity for ’90s R&B, I have always believed that the right words make or break an idea (or in your case, a product or service pitch). Words are the sole reasons why we say “yes” to one brand and “no” to another. It’s what makes a lipstick worth $5 confidently retail for $50 or your favorite thought leader more successful than her competitors. Why do you think brands like Nike, Spanx, and Michelle Obama have been able to create some of the most iconic fan followings of our time? Words, baby. That’s where the power to persuade lies. With the right words, your products and services become not just attractive – they become irresistible assets your audience can’t help but want more of.
WHICH BRINGS ME TO MY NEXT QUESTION:
DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT WORDS TO CONVERT THE PEOPLE YOU WISH TO SERVE INTO PAYING CUSTOMERS? IF NOT, I’M SO GLAD WE MET.
If you can’t explain what you do in one sentence, you shouldn’t be doing it at all.
The Steve Jobs of branding told me this once. I sat in his office, ripping up sheets of paper and nervously popping Sour Patch Kids, trying to come up with one single sentence. We were preparing our annual executive report and as head of social media strategy and online reputation management, I was tasked with summarizing the value of my team’s contributions to the business. I stuttered at the challenge of putting a world of strategy, context, and special-ness into just a few words. A 35-page strategy? No problem. But this “just a line or two” thing did my story a disservice. I couldn’t get it out of my head. Or, so I thought.
